GMAT Exam Format
Hi Sukhvinder,

Here is an article from IGD Artilog section:

GMAT is the most widely accepted exam for admission in MBA colleges. The GMAT is a computer adaptive test (CAT), which means that the computer automatically adjusts your next question based on your responses to previous questions. The exam begins by giving you a medium difficulty question. If you answer your first question correct, the second question will be of slightly higher difficulty then previous one. On the other hand, if you answer your first question incorrectly, the second question will be of slightly lesser difficulty then the previous one. So if you are answering more questions as correct, the level of difficulty of the exam will keep on increasing. The idea of self adjusting algorithm is to reach your exact skill level by the end of the test.

Please note once you have answered a question, you cannot return back to same question under any circumstance. Some of questions in the exam are experimental questions and these questions are not scored. These questions can come anywhere in exam and it is best advised to treat all questions equally as it is almost impossible to separate these questions from actual scored ones. The total exam duration is close to 4 hours (including two optional breaks).

The Exam consists of three main parts (in particular order):
1. AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment)
2. Quant (Maths)
3. Verbal (English)

AWA Section
The AWA section is the first section in the exam and consists of writing two essays. . Each essay is given an individual time limit of 30 minutes.

There are two types of essays : Analysis of Issue and Analysis of Argument

Section I    : AWA
Total Time    : 60 minutes (30 minutes for each essay)
Grading        : On a scale of 0-6

You can take an optional break after this section.

Quant Section
The second section in GMAT after break is the Quant Section. It contains 37 multiple choice questions, where each question had 5 different choices. The entire section has to be completed in 75 minutes. The average time per question is about 2 minutes although there is no individual limit on time taken for each question.

There are two types of questions: Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency questions.

Sectio II        : Quant
Total Time    : 75 minutes (no time limit for individual questions)
Grading        : Percentile based scoring. Absolute scores range from 6 to 51

You can again take an optional break after this section.

Verbal Section
The third and last section in GMAT is the Verbal Section. It contains 41 multiple choice questions, where each question had 5 different choices. The entire section also has to be completed in 75 minutes. The average time per question is about 1 minute and 45 seconds although there is no individual limit on time taken for each question.

There are three types of questions: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Correction and Critical Reasoning

Sectio III    : Verbal
Total Time    : 75 minutes (no time limit for individual questions)
Grading        : Percentile based scoring. Absolute scores range from 6 to 51

Overall Scoring of GMAT

There are two separate reportable scores in a GMAT exam:
- GMAT AWA Score : As mentioned earlier, this is reported on a scale of 0 to 6.
- Total GMAT Quant and Verbal Score : Your scores in quant and verbal sections are clubbed and reported on a range of 200 to 800.

The mean GMAT AWA score is about 4.4 and mean GMAT verbal and quant score is about 530.
